What is a Developmental Educator?

A Developmental Educator (DE) is a qualified disability professional that is dedicated to fostering empowerment, social inclusion and quality of life for people with disability and their families.

DE’s work in partnership with people with disability, their families and support networks to deliver a range of specialist services, including:

  • Skill development

    • goal setting

    • planning for life stages

    • and transitions

    • daily living and life skills

    • social communication

    • sensory awareness

    • health literacy

  • Disability Advocacy

  • Emotional regulation

About Deanna

Deanna became a Developmental Educator after finishing her Bachelor of Applied Science (Disability Studies) in 2004 at Flinders University.

She is a registered Developmental Educator through the Developmental Educators Association Incorporated (DEAI), the professional body of DE’s.

Deanna has spent most of her career working across the whole life span supporting other neurodivergent individuals and people with intellectual disabilities in a variety of settings, such as childcare, kindergarten, school and in post school options.

She has supported individuals with emotional regulation, neuroaffirming supports, social development, executive functioning and developing visual supports to assist with transitions.

Deanna has a good understanding around Pathological Demand Avoidance, and advocating around these specific support needs.

In her spare time, Deanna enjoys spending time with family, friends, her dog Rocky, playing and watching soccer and listening to fun music she can dance to.
